FAQs                                                              Home

Children: Can a child attend on their own?   We prefer those aged under 16 years to be accompanied by an adult (over 18), preferable a parent.  If a minor does attend on their own then we will see them to ascertain whether it is appropriate for them to consult alone or not.  If we feel that it is better for that child to attend with an adult then we will ask the child to inform their parent.
Coils/IUCDs: I need a coil inserted or removed. This can be done at the surgery.  You must let the receptionist know that this is what is needed so that she can book the most appropriate appointment.  Not all doctors will deal with inserting and removing coils.
Complaints: I want to complain about about the service? If the complaint is about something we have done or not done then we would ask you to use our complaints procedure.  If it is about another aspect of the health care service we would suggest that you get in touch with that department yourself.  If after you receive a formal response to your complaint you still remain dissatisfied then you can request that the complaint be reviewed by the healthcare commission.  If you are having difficulty then the PCT will always guide you.  You can also write to your local MP.

Contraception: Can I attend for contraception advice? The practice offers a family planning service to all of its patients.  We encourage patients to book into the family planning clinic but if this is not possible then we will see you in a routine appointment. See coils/IUCDs for information on coils.
Death: How do I register a death? The patient's usual doctor will sign a medical death certificate.  You will need to take this certificate to the office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages within 5 days of the death.  When you make the appointment with the Registrar's office you should check which other information you need to present.
Disability parking badge: How do I go about getting a disability parking badge?   These used to be known as 'Orange badges' but have now been superseded by the blue badge scheme.  To obtain one you will need to contact the local authority (Bromley Social Services) and arrange for them to assess you.
Guests: Can our guests be seen at the surgery if needed?  If you are registered at the surgery then we will always offer to see your relatives, friends and guests if they are staying with you.  The usual rules regarding overseas residence apply (see below).
Health checks: Can I have a general health screen done? We do not do the BUPA style health screen checks at the surgery.  We will however do any tests that are appropriate based upon the your history and symptoms.
Injuries: Does the surgery treat minor injuries such as those requiring stitches? Unfortunately we are not equipped to deal with minor injuries requiring deep cleaning or suturing.  These often require the facilities provided by an A/E department (casualty).  If you suspect that you may have broken a bone then equally you should attend A/E.
Late: What should I do if I think I am going to be late?   We ask you to inform us as soon as you think that you are going to be late.  If you are likely to be more than 15 minutes late then it would be helpful if you could re-book the appointment.
Medicals: Can I have medical done at the surgery e.g. life assurance/HGV/aviation/diving? We offer medical examination to patients who have been asked by their insurance company/solicitor/other organisations and when there is an accompanying form or request letter.  There is a charge for these examinations which is often covered by the requesting agency.
Can I have a private health screen done at my surgery? Unfortunately we are not able to provide this service.  If you are interested in such a medical then we advise you contact a private provider.
Prescription: Which chemist can I take my prescription to?   You can take you NHS or private prescription for dispensing to any pharmacist in the UK.
Can I convert my hospital prescription to a standard prescription at the surgery?   If the hospital has issued you with a prescription then you should get that dispensed at the hospital pharmacy.  Under very few and difficult circumstances will we agree to change a hospital script to an 'ordinary' script.
Can I exchange my private prescription for an NHS prescription?   We will only do this if we have been involved in the management and referral process and if we have received communication from the specialist informing us of any prescriptions or recommendations.
Overseas: Will you see me or a relative if we live abroad?

We will see anybody of any nationality.  The NHS has strict regulations about who can be treated free of charge on the NHS.  If you fall outside the NHS guidance then you will be charged for the consultation.

Register with you: Can I join the practice as a patient? If you want to join this practice then you must check with the receptionist that your address fall with-in our practice area.  If it does then you will be asked to complete some registration forms.  If it doesn't then we are afraid you will have to register with another practice.  The PCT can give you a list of local practices.
Relative: Can I come and discuss a relative's or friend's care with the doctor or nurse?

We do recommend that you ask the person concerned for their consent first.  If this is difficult or not desirable then you can come and tell us your concerns about them but we are unlikely to be able to divulge any medical facts about them because of patient  confidentiality.

Repeat Prescriptions: Can I request a prescription over the phone? We will only accept a request for a repeat prescription over the telephone in some exceptional circumstances.  Exceptional circumstances might be sudden disability or serious illness where someone on your behave is unable to attend the surgery.
Can I request a repeat prescription by post? Yes you can.  Please ensure that you have put a self addressed and stamped envelope if you wish us to return the prescription to you.
Can you arrange for my prescription to be dispensed and delivered to me? We would prefer for you to make your own arrangement with the pharmacy of your choice.  Once you have done that, and as long as you advised us,  then we will forward the prescription to your requested pharmacy.  Another option for you is to use the electronic Prescribing Management Service (ePMS).
Tests: How do I get my Blood test results?   You will have been advised to contact the surgery 1 week after the blood tests (some tests take longer).  We ask that you telephone in the afternoon.  If we have received the results the receptionist will advice you of the comments left by the doctor.
Time: How long can I spend with the doctor or nurse at an appointment? Appointments with both, doctors and nurses are for 10 minutes.  If you perceive that your problem/s will take longer than 10 minutes then please book a longer appointment.  You can do this at the point of booking the appointment.
Travel: I need some advice about travel vaccinations.   Contact the receptionist and tell her where and when you are travelling.  She will be able to advise you directly or will find out from our travel clinic about any required vaccinations and will then inform you.
Warts and verrucas: Do you treat these?

Warts and verrucas are self limiting and very rarely require medical management.  Your chemist will be able to advise you on the best remedies.

Women: I want to see a lady doctor.

We have several lady doctors at the surgery.  However if you are unable to get an appointment with one of them then you can request a chaperone and see a male doctor.
